Start & grow / PRACTICAL GUIDE
How to start an independent insurance agency
Start with the business you want to build. Then connect the licensing, markets, systems, people, and capital needed to run it.
Choose your customers and build the plan
Define your target customers, geographic area, and initial lines of business. Estimate the number of opportunities you can realistically generate and service. Write a conservative operating budget that includes setup costs, recurring expenses, owner income needs, and room for delays. Treat the plan as something to test, not a sales forecast to defend.
Verify licensing and form the business
Individual licensing and agency or business-entity requirements are distinct questions. Check the authorities for each state where you plan to operate, including location, responsible-person, appointment, and renewal requirements as applicable. Coordinate entity formation, tax setup, and banking with qualified advisors. Florida readers can begin with the state’s agency-opening guidance linked below.
Build your market-access strategy
Identify which carriers and products match your intended clients. Ask what experience, production, documentation, and operating support prospective carrier partners expect. Explore direct relationships, networks, franchises, and wholesale options. Confirm the exact placement and service model; a membership or software subscription is not itself a guarantee of an appointment.
Prepare to serve the first client
Discuss E&O coverage with an appropriate provider. Select an agency management system, quoting workflow, business email, phone service, and website. Define who handles new inquiries, policy changes, renewals, payments, and unresolved issues. Test a fictional client from first contact through renewal so gaps are visible before launch.
Your next steps
- Define your target clients and business mix.
- Check current individual and agency requirements.
- Prepare a budget and a market-access plan.
- Arrange E&O, systems, and service responsibilities.
- Test your first-client workflow.
