Comparative raters: look beyond the lowest price

A comparative rater can simplify gathering quotes. Its value depends on relevant markets, dependable information, and a careful review of the resulting options.

Match the rater to your business

Comparative raters support obtaining quotes from multiple insurers through a common workflow. Vertafore’s PL Rating page describes personal-lines quoting and connections with agency management systems. Before evaluating a tool, define your states, products, and carrier relationships. Request a current availability list for your intended package; a connection in the software does not itself give your agency authority to write with that insurer.

Test the complete quoting journey

Use fictional examples of the households or businesses you normally serve. Start from your agency system, enter the needed information, obtain results, and follow the handoff to the insurer. Record what transferred correctly, what required re-entry, and what failed. Ask how your staff will see incomplete submissions or unavailable results so a missing quote is not mistaken for a deliberate market decision.

Review more than the premium

A useful side-by-side review should identify differences in limits, deductibles, forms, endorsements, and eligibility. Build a staff checklist for confirming the assumptions behind each proposal. A rating result is not proof that coverage has been bound. Confirm final terms and the binding process with the insurer, and document the client’s selections through your agency’s established workflow.

Measure usable results

During a pilot, track time to a usable proposal, duplicate entry, corrections, and the share of submissions that produce actionable results. Ask your team which exceptions still require carrier-site work. A tool that returns many irrelevant results may contribute less than one that supports the markets your clients actually need. Include subscriptions, setup, training, and ongoing maintenance in your comparison.

Your next conversation

  • Verify your states, products, and eligible carriers.
  • Test data transfer in both directions where supported.
  • Review coverage assumptions alongside price.
  • Measure time to a usable proposal, not just a quote screen.
