Independent, but supported: why agencies join larger groups

A larger group can give a local agency access to people and resources it would struggle to build alone. The value depends on what the agency actually uses.

Broaden your placement options

Market access is a common reason to explore a group. For example, SIAA describes both direct carrier codes and placement through a local Master Agency’s AccessPlus facility. Those are different operating paths. Ask any group which path applies to your agency, what approvals are required, and how client service will work. Membership should never be treated as a promise that every carrier will accept every risk.

Share the work of building capability

Some groups also offer training, marketing resources, technology arrangements, and succession support. SIAA’s existing-agency program describes these types of services. Their usefulness will depend on the people, delivery, and eligibility behind them. Ask to see a training calendar, meet the support team, and understand which services are included versus separately priced.

Make peer learning part of the plan

Consider the questions an owner faces each month: how to onboard a producer, organize renewal work, or decide when to hire. A useful peer group gives you people with whom to discuss these decisions. Ask how members connect and whether meetings address agencies at your stage. Before joining, choose one operating problem you want that community to help you solve.

Join for a reason you can measure

A formal network is not necessary for every agency. An agency with suitable appointments and strong internal support may prefer other professional relationships. If you do join, set a six-month review: Which placement problems were resolved? Which staff completed training? Which processes improved? Compare those results with the fees, obligations, and time involved. Scale matters when it produces useful support for your clients and team.

Your next conversation

  • Name the resources you cannot efficiently build internally.
  • Meet the people who would support your team.
  • Set a six-month review with specific outcomes.
  • Compare membership with other ways to obtain that support.
