Agency Clusters and Networks

How to choose the right network, aggregator, or cluster

Start with the agency you want to build. Then look for a group whose markets, support, and agreement fit that plan.

Define the gap you need to close

Write down your target clients, states, lines of business, and current placement problems. A new personal-lines agency may need a different relationship from an established commercial specialist. The Big “I” identifies a market-access strategy and a professional support network as parts of planning an independent agency. Use that starting point to name your three most important needs before scheduling sales calls.

Look past the label

Treat “network,” “aggregator,” and “cluster” as conversation starters, not a complete description of the arrangement. Ask who holds the carrier relationship, who submits business, who services the account, and who receives commission. Request a written explanation of the proposed structure. A familiar carrier logo on a presentation does not establish your agency’s eligibility or access to a particular product.

Compare evidence from similar agencies

Give each candidate the same three representative account scenarios, with client identities removed. Ask how each would be placed and who would help when underwriting questions arise. Request references from agencies with a similar size and business mix. During those calls, ask for examples of support received, typical response times, and surprises during onboarding.

Use a simple decision sheet

Score market fit, service, economics, and flexibility separately. Record unanswered questions instead of filling gaps with assumptions. A strong result in one category should not erase a serious weakness in another. Before choosing, ask the group to put the specific services and conditions you are relying on into the documents your advisors will review.

Your next conversation

  • Identify three business needs the group must meet.
  • Confirm access for your states, products, and target accounts.
  • Speak with two comparable member agencies.
  • Compare written terms alongside the sales presentation.
